During the height of the Great Depression a Key West businessman Norburg Thompson commissioned the construction of a sailing schooner to repair undersea cables throughout the Caribbean.

She is Key West's sole surviving authentic tall ship. The last of Key Wests working sailing vessels. The Western Union served the Western Union Telegraph Co. for 35 years and is believed to be the worlds only surviving cable ship.
