The Union was assembled at the foot of Simonton Street at an abandoned WWI seaplane hanger Aeromarine.

It took about 9 months to build the Western Union. The estimated cost of the Western Union was $35000 in 1939 dollars.

She was launched from Key West on April 7, 1939.
